Tamarind Restaurant

If you ever find yourself strolling down Wellingborough Road in Northampton and your taste buds start craving something bold, fragrant, and utterly satisfying, Tamarind Restaurant is where you should be heading. Located at 151-153 Wellingborough Rd, NN1 4DX, this spot isn’t just another curry house-it’s where North Indian tradition meets contemporary comfort, all served with a generous side of hospitality.

From the moment you walk in, the cozy ambiance sets the tone. The layout is modern yet rooted in culture, and the vibe is warm, welcoming, and surprisingly lively-especially when they turn up the energy with live music nights. If you’re after a place that’s buzzing yet not overwhelming, this is a sweet spot for both solo dining and catching up with friends.

But let’s talk food-because really, that’s what Tamarind Restaurant is all about. Their menu is a well-balanced showcase of both vegetarian-friendly and non-vegetarian delights, perfect for mixed company. If you’re into classics, you’re in for a treat. Their Butter Chicken is a crowd favorite for a reason: creamy, slightly smoky, with just the right hit of spice. It pairs beautifully with a Garlic Coriander Naan-a pillowy, aromatic flatbread that deserves applause all on its own.

Looking for something to kick things off? Go with the Paneer Tikka as a starter-perfectly grilled chunks of Indian cottage cheese, marinated in spices that linger on your palate long after the last bite. The Samosas and Pakoras also make for great small plate options, especially if you’re the kind who likes to nibble while sipping on something cold. And speaking of drinks, Tamarind has a solid bar menu. Whether it’s a chilled beer, a refreshing cocktail, or a glass of wine, there’s plenty to complement your meal.

Those who lean towards plant-based meals will appreciate the variety of vegan and vegetarian dishes here. The Saag Paneer (spinach and cheese curry) and Saag Aloo with Garlic Naan (spinach and potatoes) are both earthy, vibrant, and deeply comforting. Pair either with Coconut Rice for a mild sweetness that balances the spice like a dream.

Service is another thing that stands out. The staff here don’t just serve-they guide. Whether it’s suggesting the best dish for your spice level or recommending the perfect chutney to go with your choice of naan, they’re genuinely helpful without hovering. Plus, if you’re dining with accessibility needs, they’ve got you covered. The restaurant features wheelchair-accessible seating, entrances, toilets, and parking, making it one of the more inclusive spots around.

For those days when you're not in the mood to dine in, Tamarind Restaurant also offers takeaway, delivery, and even no-contact delivery options, ensuring you can enjoy their delicious dishes wherever you are. Whether it's a weeknight dinner or a weekend treat, the convenience factor is hard to beat.

Tamarind is also popular for lunch crowds as well as late-night cravings, thanks to their extended hours and a menu that doesn’t feel rushed or watered down. It's also a halal-friendly space, serving halal food that doesn't compromise on authenticity or quality.

While the Indian restaurant scene in the UK is undeniably competitive, Tamarind holds its own by blending tradition with thoughtful innovation. Their menu doesn’t try to do everything-it focuses on doing a few things really well. Dishes are fresh, thoughtfully spiced, and plated with pride. Whether you’re in the mood for something spicy like the Spicy Scallop Roll, or leaning towards a comforting bowl of Chicken Tikka Masala Rice, the experience feels satisfying without being overly indulgent.

In a town full of dining options, Tamarind Restaurant doesn’t scream for attention-it earns it. And once you’ve tried it, you’ll likely be thinking about that Butter Naan long after you've left.

First time eating at Tamarind and highly recommend! The decor and atmosphere is beautifully stunning, very clean and modern. We were seated quickly on a busy Friday night. Our drinks were ordered and poppadoms served within 5 minutes of being seated. The starters and mains came out within an appropriate time frame and the quality and presentation of the food was superb.

I do not write a bad reviews but this time I have to make an exception as this was the first time in my life I had experienced that kind of approach. We could feel all the time we were rushed! First time in my life I was given a bill without asking for it! I think we should have been informed we can not stay there more than 2h before booking a table so simply I would choose a different place. Fair prices, good food, delicious cheescake, but unfortunately that rush did not allow us to fully enjoy it. That was my second and the last time in Tamarind.

My son and I enjoyed a wonderful Mother/Son date night at this delightful family run Indian restaurant. The service was top notch from the beginning. All the staff were attentive and knowledgeable about the menus. We had the recommended dishes which did not disappoint and we left with huge satisfied smiles! An extra special thanks to Raffi and his brother for looking after our table. This family run business is going to now be our favourite local restaurant.
